Platinum

  • How is it better/different than the Grand Calibur?

The solid steel construction provides greater pressure and allows for less turns of the handle. It also accommodates steel rule dies.

  • Can I only use Spellbinders dies?

Platinum is a universally friendly machine. You can use most dies on the market, providing their width is 8.5” or less.

  • What can I cut with the machine?

You can cut these materials with Contour™ dies. Can cut up to 8 layers in one pass with use of steel rule dies.

  • Is it easy to transport?

Yes. The handle on top makes it easy to carry and the sides fold up for both transport and storage. The turn handle is also removable if needed.

  • How much does it weigh?

    14.7 lbs

  • What comes with the machine?

The contents of the box: machine, instruction manual, pair of clear standard cutting plates, one rubber embossing mat, one embossing plate, one standard platform for use with etched dies and embossing folders.

  • Is the machine easy to use?

Yes. The instruction manual explains all you need to know for making die-cutting and embossing sandwiches, as well as, the labels on the platforms provide instructions, and Spellbinders YouTube provides tutorials.

  • How do I know if my sandwich is too thick to go through the machine?

You will feel a resistance and find it difficult to turn the handle. If this happens, back out the sandwich and remove some layers.

  • The machine looks great, how do I keep it clean?

You can use a microfiber cloth to keep the daily dust off or a slightly damp cloth to remove any marks. We also have a Dust Cover designed specifically for the Platinum you can purchase.

  • My cutting plates are starting to warp, will this affect their cutting?

No, but the warping is inevitable. There are ways to extend the lives of your cutting plates: flip them over each time you use them and front to back, also if at all possible, don’t always cut in the center. You can also use one as your top cutting plate, then when that has had its time, switch it out with the bottom plate. You will know it’s time to replace them when they no longer make clean cuts.

  • I’m trying to cut out certain sentiments/patterns on my paper, but my etched dies keep moving- help!

Two strategies you can use: 1. If you are using the Standard Platform, try taping (removable tape) down the die to your material or 2. Use our Magnetic Platform. The magnets keep you die in place!

  • My standard cutting plates are too small for my Medium and Large Contour dies.

You will always need to use a cutting place larger than the die you are cutting with. For our Medium and Large Contour dies, please use our Cutting Plates, XL.

  • I’ve been cutting some extra thick material in my Contour dies, and a bit of the blade popped out of the die.

Place a piece of wood on top of the die over the area that has popped out, and using a hammer, gently tap back into place.

  • Will I ever need to replace my machine or Contour dies?

No – unless due to manufacture defect or customer misuse. Please refer to the instruction manual for proper sandwiches. Regarding Contour dies, because they are cutting against the plates and not another form of metal, they do not dull or require sharpening.

  • My handle has come loose.

You can fix it in a similar manner you assembled it. Remove the silicone cover and using the allen wrench supplied, tighten the screw.

  • My etched die isn’t cutting completely.

Try one of these methods: 1. Shimming your sandwich or 2. Place your etched die at an angle

  • I have a 3D box/bag Contour die and the scorelines are cutting.

We have a Crease Plate you can purchase that has been created for these particular dies.

TOOLS

  • After I cut out a shape with a die, there are lines in my Cut Mat. Is this normal?

Yes, this is completely normal. The Cut Mats will show the shapes of die templates that have been cut. The mats are long lasting, but will in time need to be replaced. Both sides of the mat are functional, be sure to flip the mat over to use both surfaces. Click to findSpellbinders Grand Calibur® Machine Accessories, Spellbinders Presto Punch™ Machine Accessories, Spellbinders Wizard™ Machine Accessories,

  • My paper is stuck in the die. What should I do?

The open areas of the metal die may “catch” your cutting material. Simply push the cut piece out from the back side with a stylus or dull-pointed tool. For highly detailed die templates, such as the Spellbinders Shapeabilities® Pendants, place a piece of waxed paper between the die template and the paper before cutting.

  • I hear a crunching sound when I use the cutting side of the die. Is this normal?

This is normal – it is simply the sound of paper being cut.

  • My Spellbinders® die template does not have any guides. How do I line up the shape to emboss without guides?

The cut edge or “ridge” is your guide. Your cut shape will fit snuggly in the cavity of the die shape for the emboss function.

TOOL 'N ONE

  • I’ve stored the spatula attachment in the center storage compartment of the tool, but can’t get it out. Help!

The Tool 'n One has a storage compartment in the center, but unscrews on both sides. Each side with a logo, Spellbinders or Tool 'n One, turn counter-clockwise to open and reveal slots for storage.

  • I’m having trouble inserting/removing the attachments.

    a. There are two insertion points on the Tool 'n One – one at each end. To insert an attachment, pull down on the blue plastic portion of the end to reveal the metal. You will see a small metal ball, and on each attachment, is a section of indentations. Be sure to line these up with the position of the metal ball. With the plastic portion pulled down, insert tip. Adjust as needed.

    b. To remove an attachment, follow same steps. Pull down on plastic and remove.

  • Who do I contact if I need additional assistance?

Should you need any further assistance/have questions, please contact our Customer Service.

  • What is the purpose of each attachment?

    a. The Tool 'n One comes with two attachments: piercing and spatula. Both will help with removal of cut pieces from your die templates. On the back of our wafer-thin dies, you will notice very small poke holes (especially on more intricate dies), use the piercing attachment to poke through those holes and remove your cut piece. Use the spatula to lift larger pieces away from the die templates.

    b. 3 Stylus Tips- these are great when working with pieces that need to be shaped or molded. For example, when creating flowers, use the stylus tips to mold and shape the petals and center of the flower to give it more dimension.

    c. Quilling Tip- this is for those who enjoy the art of paper quilling, or just want an easier way to roll paper. Insert a thin piece of paper into the slit at the end of the tip and start rolling.

    d. Foam Applicators- these are great for applying and blending ink to a cut piece in a die template or any project. You can gently wash them or if you would like to keep an applicator for different ink colors, easily switch out the foam for a new one.

    e. Brayer- the brayer comes in handy when needing to apply ink to larger areas or when doing mixed media. Roll the brayer in your ink and then onto your embossing folder, stamp, project etc. Easily clean it with a non-alcoholic wipe.

  • When using the brush, what is the best method for removing chads (small paper pieces)?

    a. We recommend one of two methods: Place the die template with cut pieces on our Magnetic Handy Mat (or any foam/giving surface) and roll your brush attachment over the BACK side of the die. –or- while holding in your hand, roll the brush over the back side of the die.

    b. If you place the die directly on your table or another hard surface, you won’t find as much success because there is no give in that surface as you push the brush into the template.
